How Do I Join?

Joining in membership is a wonderful way of committing oneself to the mission and ministry of the local church.  We are pleased that you are considering this option and want to help answer your questions.

That being said, we are not a church that tries to push people into joining before they are ready.  You are most welcome to visit with us in worship and participate in church functions until you sense God's call on you to take the step into membership.

Our adult membership process involves a small number of steps.  This process is followed for all incoming members, whether they are professing their faith for the first time or transferring their membership in from another congregation.

1.  Starting Points.  This is a five session class that is typically scheduled on consecutive weeks on a Sunday or weekday evening.  These sessions are taught by the pastor.  Childcare will be available if requested in advance.  These sessions cover

  • Essentials of the Christian Faith
  • The Roots & History of Methodism
  • The Theology and Doctrine of The United Methodist Church
  • Exploring Ministry & Discipleship at Christ Church
  • The Meaning of Membership, Membership Vows and the Christ Church Covenant

2.  Pastoral Team Interview.  If after the Starting Points class you decide to continue on to membership, a one-on-one consultation session (or by couples, if married) is scheduled with the pastor.  This session allows us to get to know one another better, explore your faith journey, and consider the options for ministry and discipleship involvement.

3.  Orientation.  A gathering of the church leadership comes together to welcome you and provide additional information about their areas of ministry.  This is a very informal time and provides a nice way for you to learn more about the church, and for the leadership to get to know you.

4.  Membership Sunday.  Upon the successful completion of the membership process, you will be received into membership during whichever worship service you normally attend.  You will be asked to affirm your commitment to the Christ Church Covenant.  You will not be expected to give a personal testimony before the congregation.  There will be a reception following the church service for the congregation to welcome you into membership.
